What is Art Therapy?

“Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that uses active art-making, creative process, and applied psychological theory within the therapy process. It engage engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone.” - American Art Therapy Association

Words are often not enough to describe the complexity of the human experience. Art is a dynamic, tangible, and holistic means of self-expression that allows the breadth of the human experience to be fully conveyed. The creative process provides the opportunities for inquiry, awareness, and healing.

Art therapy is effective in treating a wide variety of mental health needs including anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, life events/transitions, and more! Art therapy works with all ages and abilities and can aid in fostering self-awareness & self-esteem, facilitating self-expression, encouraging problem-solving and communication, pain-reduction, increasing well-being, processing emotional distress & trauma, and cultivating emotional resilience.

I have been making art for 18 years and have personal experience in the power of art as a healing experience. Art therapy requires no art skill or know how and is not concerned with “good” vs “bad” art but instead the making of meaningful art for the purposes of healing.

We are all artists. We can all engage with artmaking for healing.
