What is art therapy?
According to AATA (The American Art Therapy Association), “Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that uses active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory within the therapy process. It engage engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone.” Importantly, art therapy requires no art skill or know how. Art therapy is not concerned with “good” vs “bad” art but instead the making of meaningful art for the purposes of healing.
Why art therapy?
Words are often not enough to describe the complexity of the human experience. Art is a dynamic, tangible, and holistic means of self-expression that allows the breadth of the human experience to be fully conveyed. The creative process provides the opportunities for inquiry, awareness, and healing.
